000124 - House gets!

On my birthday last Saturday, I made an impulse purchase and this is what it looks like on the outside:

Yes, I actually bought a house believe it or not! It all pretty much happened in one day, from the inspection at 10:15am, to making an offer to the estate agent just after lunch and then getting the vendor to agree on the final price and me signing the papers just after dinner at around 7:30pm in front of a local cafe! It felt kinda weird and crazy.

The place itself is a really nice little 2 bedroom unit, we like the location as it's walking distance to shops and amenities. Settlement isn't until early next year but I am looking forward to moving into a new home.

All other things seem pretty small news in comparison. At work last week during one of our major vendor/client's promotional days, we all got to have fairy floss (cotton candy), popcorn and hot dogs! To top off the most awesome day at work, I also won a bluetooth wireless keyboard (really thin) and mouse!! Perfect timing, too, since my PC mouse was starting to really act up recently.

Also at work I got to sit in on an interview and I was on the other side of the table as an interviewer for the very first time this Monday. Strange feeling but I like being the interviewer rather than the interviewee!

Spent most of this week organising a home loan, finding a solicitor and just making the house purchase all possible in between work. There are so many fees and costs that I hadn't realised, guess I should have done more research. And I think I signed the biggest cheque in my life when I paid the deposit!

Whatever time I had left, I spent organising artworks for the upcoming comic-themed group exhibition, Just Looking. I really tried to draw something new and exclusive for this exhibition but unfortunately I just couldn't get it out of my and have only done 2 pencils sketches. I guess I've just been too excited about the house!

Finally saw Pan's Labyrinth on DVD recently and thought that was a pretty good movie. I don't know if it lives up to the hype that everyone keeps raving on about it. The guy at Borders said it was his favourite movie from last year! Sheesh.

Oh I finished watching the anime series, Bokurano. Sad ending but I really liked the series even thought it diverted quite a bit from the original manga. Will be interesting now to read how the manga turns out. Currently trying to get into Karas (wow, awesome animation), Gundam 00 (feels a bit like Gigantic Formula to me for some reason) and maybe Dragonaut (don't know if I like it enough to keep watching yet).

Pickup a few comics, too, including a manhwa called Chunchu (fantastic artwork and the fantasy story is quite cool), Snow, the latest issues of Savage Dragon and Powers. I'm really looking forward to Joe Mad's Ultimate vol. 3 in a month or so as well. Venom Hulk? Yes, please.

In terms of video games, I'm still waiting for my copy of Castlevania X to arrive in the mail and haven't had much time to play much otherwise.

Anyway, joining the mortgage club kinda scares me but owning an actual property where I can call my own home is exciting as well.

000122 - Post-Armageddon 07

It's been just over 2 weeks since the Armageddon 2007 - Melbourne pop culture convention weekend and boy have I been knackered and trying to recuperate ever since. Overall, I had a fantastic weekend, caught up with both new and familiar faces, sold lots of comics and would have to declare it a great success! Big thanks goes out to Bill and everyone who help organised a great show!!

Picked up all the print run of Knight-Edge #4 on Friday morning. I had a bit of anxiety because the first proof copy they showed me had pages all out of order and hadn't seen any more copies until Friday but I'm really happy with the production quality and pretty much exceeded my expectations. Got a couple of safety vest from Bunnings. Headed over to the Melbourne Convention Centre to set up our table in the afternoon and got that over and done with in less than an hour. The table was positioned right in the middle of the Comics Creator's aisle and I shared the partitioned space with a fellow local comic creator named Jason Franks (Blackglass Press). Right in front, our view faced more dreary blue partition walls. Little did I know that would be the least of my worries come opening the next day...

Saturday morning, I got to the convention centre right on time at quarter to 9am. Met up with Jason for the first time and had to re-setup our table together since 2 x 1.5m wide tables were obviously not going to fit in a 2.5m wide partitioned space! My first impression of the convention itself was that it wasn't all that big in terms of the space it occupied. Probably 2/3 of the size of Supanova Sydney 06 out in Homebush. Both the stage and theatres were on level 2, separate from the convention floor itself.

Talked with Jason quite a bit, for me Knight-Edge did fairly well for most of the morning and early afternoon. Jason had faired better in the afternoon with his comics than me from memory. What was challenging for us though was that the THQ booth was diagonally opposite us to our right and they had wrestling video game commentaries repeatedly over us all throughout the weekend. I was fascinated watching the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam game from afar at the beginning but I couldn't look over at that direction by the end of the day!

While I wouldn't call it a highlight of the day, former Australian Idol, Bobby Flynn, came by our table at one point. I'm not sure if Jason knew who he was but we both just asked him how he was and he did the same. He didn't buy anything from us but I think the comic book with the guitar on the cover called Rockstar Pizza that Jason's self-published really caught his eye (as the cover did a lot of others over the weekend).

Was too buggered by the end of Saturday to socialise with any of the comics people. Although no one really said where they were going or didn't tell us (with the exception of Adam Briggs, who I never did end up calling back later either). It was kinda weird to just go home and crash rather than go back to a hotel and crash, which is usually what happens every other comic convention I've been to before.

Sunday, the morning started off really slow and I noticed the crowd was a bit different to Saturday's, as it seemed more family oriented. When a couple of kids came over started asking for sketches, I knew I had to change my game plan and try and sell my comics a bit more today. After having not drawing any sketches the day before, I did about 5 sketch requests on Sunday, two of which were caricatures. The most encouraging moment for me was when a guy who had brought Knight-Edge #1 earlier in the morning came back in the afternoon and told he that he liked it! In fact, a few folks browsed early and made good on their promise to come back and bought a few of my bundle specials!! All these moments really made my weekend. Oh oh and Colin Wilson, one of my local idols, came by and said that he like my Trigger story, too!!

The Swag (Comics I got): Amazing Joy Buzzards #5, Dicks #1-3, Hard Words, Isolation Room, Junk, Rockstar Pizza, Something Weird #3, and Vienna vol. 1-3. And something non-Aussie, I also picked up Adam Warren's Empowered vol. 2 as well as a Gundam X GX-9900 figure!
Things I didn't get: like talking with Bruce Timm, didn't get to meet Billy West, didn't get to talk to a lot of other Aussie creators as much as I'd like to, didn't get to see the new version of The List or pick up anything from the OzSlaught crew.
The numbers: for those interested in figures and such, I sold 74 comic books over the 2 day weekend with the attendance is said to be just over 10,000! My min. hope was to sell around 30 comics or so since this was the first major comic convention here in Melbourne since the last OzCon I think. Comparison-wise, Supanova Brisbane 04 still remains my best convention yet in terms of sales and overall satisfaction (one kid bought the first issue in the morning, told me he read it at lunch and came back to buy the other issues!). Still aiming to sell over 100 comics one of these days.

Next: try to work on new artwork for the upcoming Just Looking group gallery exhibition and artwork & designs for the beat'em up game that I'm making with my mate Josh!!

000121 - Armageddon this weekend!

Haven't posted here in what seems like aeons.

I've been working from 9am to 5:30pm at my day job, come home, have dinner, rest a bit and start working again at from 9pm to about 2am on finishing Knight-Edge #4. I've been consistently doing that for the past 6 weeks almost and I've been quite productive. Averaged about 3 pages of penciling a week, then I'd ink about 5 pages a week after that and I had 22 pages completely drawn. With less than 2 weeks, I gray-toned, letter and imposition it all and now it's all at the printers and hopefully it'll turn out awesome (fingers crossed). Almost seemed impossible to finish at various points but I just pushed ahead.

Armageddon Expo Australia is on this coming weekend (Sat 13th - Sun 14th October) already at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre (Jeff's Shed). I've got a table there in Comics Creators' Alley as Paragon Comics and will be selling Knight-Edge #1 - #4 as well as the remaining copies of Shiranui, and posters.

As for the rest of what I've been up to since I last blogged, let me see.

Work has been pretty good so far. Just past my first 3 months and have another 3 months until my full 6 months of probation period. There's not much to really talk about, I'm enjoying it because I get to do both print and web jobs and we get quite a bit of liberty when it comes to the brief and time to implement and learn new methods to get the job done (I'm currently learning Abode Labs Spry & Ajax).

Haven't had much time to read comics or manga lately due to being heads down and thumbs up with finishing issue 4. I think somewhere in my to-be-read pile is the latest issue of Hellboy, Wolfman, The Ride and MPD Psycho vol. 2. I'm very disappointed that I missed out on grabbing a copy of Lucha Libre #1 (Image Comics English edition) when it came out last month.

Movies, haven't seen alot of movies either. Although I haven't posted for so long, I've got a few to list. Here's a quick and dirty recap on the ones I can remember: The Simpsons movie (pretty much a long episode but was quite entertaining and funny), Die Hard 4.0 (some really great action but it's lost that "Die Hard" feel I think), Zodiac (a bit drawn out but a really good murder mystery without too much gloss), Ratatouille (fantastic animation, hilarious and very mouth watering realistic looking food scenes), and 200 Pounds Beauty (Korean romantic comedy melodrama that's borderline between funny and disturbing on vanity and the meaning of being beautiful).

As for video games, there's quite a few games I've brought that I'd love to find the time to play them. I got Phoenix Wright 3: Trial & Tribulations on the DS and have only played through the first case. Got my PS2 chipped finally just so I could play Persona 3 which is really fun but I've only clocked in about 4 hours on that. Also gave in and got a PSP Slim/Lite! That screen is truly amazing, Tekken Dark Resurrection (amazing graphics, sound and playability, some characters like the new Lili are a bit uneven in terms of strength though), DJ Max Portable 2 (love the music and MVs even though they are so simple in terms of animation) and LocoRoco (so sweet & cute it makes your teeth rot) are the only games I've got so far. Looking forward to getting and playing Phantom Hourglass on the DS and Castlevania X on the PSP soon.

Wow, that was a long post. I guess that makes up for not posting all this time. You may now go and pee.
